Manners

Dear Aidan,

I so very proud of you today. Not only have you learned that "gross" is not the proper response to someone who has just sneezed, but you also learned "I'm sorry". I know that you were just parroting me since I had apologized to you only a few moments before for accidentally scratching your leg while changing your diaper. Still, it's a step in the right direction towards raising you to have good manners.

Tomorrow is Christmas. Hopefully by next year, we'll have you saying thanks and thank you without being reminded. But for now, I'll settle for you agreeing to give hugs after you finish opening your gifts. We'll keep working on the manners in the meantime.

Love, Mama

Hugging You

Dear Aidan,

Last Friday, twenty little boys and girls were killed by a bad man with a gun. No one knows the full story yet on why he did what he did, only that he must have been very sick to have done something so awful. You're still too little to even be aware of what is going on around you, and you definitely didn't understand why Mommy cried when she held you Friday after work. You fell asleep in my arms yesterday afternoon, and it was so hard to put you down even though your sister needed me.

Daddy and I can't imagine the pain those other mommies and daddies are feeling right now without their babies to hug. We do know that we won't always be able to protect you. We can raise you to know how to protect yourself and to help others when they are in need and hope that that will be enough.

I love you and your sister so very much, and I will always try my hardest to keep you safe.

Love, Mama
