Only Child

Dear Aidan,

Today was your last day as an only child. Tomorrow, Daddy and I will go to the hospital and give birth to your baby sister. We'll bring her home a few days later and start life as a foursome. It will probably be confusing for you. "Who is this baby?" "Why is she staying here?" "Why is my daddy holding and loving on her instead of me?" I promise that just because we love you new baby sister doesn't mean we love you any less. In fact, love can never be divided. It can only be multiplied! There is so much room in daddy and my hearts that we couldn't possibly love you less. In fact, every day we love you more than we did the day before.

There are going to be times when you feel like you're always in trouble or being scolded for doing something wrong. We're not trying to be mean. We're still learning how to be good parents for you and Alice. We'll make mistakes, but please know that we still love you more than life itself. Nothing will ever change that.

Please don't feel like Alice is here to replace you either. You will always be our little boy and first baby. Daddy and I will do everything we can to make you feel included in all the new, exciting, and sometimes scary changes that bringing home a new baby can bring. In time, you won't even remember what it was like to not be a big brother. She's going to adore and love you just as much as Daddy and I do. You'll be her whole world, the one she looks up to and learns from (please try to not teach her how to hurt her head though).

I can't wait to bring Alice home so you can start to love her too.

Love,
Mama
