Little

Dear Aidan,

Lately life has been rough for us. You've been acting out and throwing tantrums for what seems to be the most ridiculous things. You don't want to wear your sandals, but really you do. You want to sit on the potty, but ok, not really. You want the truck, oh! but Alice is playing with the ball so you want that instead but no, she can't have the truck because you still want that too. You don't want to take a nap, but darn it you're so tired. It would be funny if it wasn't so frustrating trying to help you express yourself. I know that most of the time it's because you're frustrated or just tired, but sometimes it's very hard to remind myself that you're still trying to process this great, big, scary world.

I'll admit, I've been losing my temper with you a lot more than I should be. I yell right back at you, something I swore I wouldn't do after watching other moms do the very same thing with horrible results (worse tantrums, giving in so their own child would just stop, etc.). I've spanked you multiple times (I'm not against corporeal punishment, but I think I've been way too hard on you). I make mistakes every single day, mistakes that I'm not proud of. I'm trying, sweetheart, I really am. I know this is just a phase, and soon you'll be able to sort your feelings out better. I know that I'm going to miss you being this little. It's why I'm trying to start each day with a fresh start and hoping to end each night not feeling guilty for losing my cool with you. I love you so very much and just want you to be happy.

Tantrum Tornado

Dear Aidan,

I love you so much. This is a phase. We will get through this. You're only little for a little while.

This is my mantra right now while we try to get past these awful Terrible Twos. Daddy and I are learning so much patience because of you, and I only hope that you're learning that when we say no or tell you not to do something that we do still love you, we just don't want you to get hurt or hopped up on sugar or use those naughty words that someone shouldn't have taught you in the first place.

Also, could you please stop freaking out every time I try to wash your hair? I don't want you to be the smelly kid with the gross hair. I know it doesn't feel good when the shampoo gets in your eyes. that's why I ask you to look up or close your eyes, but you do it even when it's just water. You don't seem to mind when you've dumped the water on your own head, so why is it different when I do it? I guess I should just be grateful that you're taking baths again instead of those three minute speed baths when you'd just stand there and scream.

Remember When

Dear Aidan,

I wrote you this letter the day before you turned three months old. I'm so glad I came across it again to remind me that you won't always be as little as you are right now and that I truly need to be cherishing not just the good things you do but the bad as well (ok, not bad, but the naughty). You see, yesterday you were especially naughty. You found two sharpie markers and decided the sheets on Daddy and my bed needed some artwork. Then you also decided that some of my clothing as well as Alice's bouncy seat needed to be freshened up with some added color. Add on top of that the multiple temper tantrums while I was trying to take care of your sick sister, and I had had enough. I know that I spanked you a little too hard, and I shouldn't have put you to bed early just so you'd quit pestering me about Mickey Mouse and Bubble Guppies. I just needed a break. From now on though, I'm going to remember that you're still my sweet baby who needs more gentleness than I gave you yesterday. I love you, sweet boy, even when you're being naughty.

"To My Son,
A week from tomorrow, you will be 3 months old. Where did the time go? Just yesterday, I was still pregnant. An hour ago, you were just born. Or that's how it seems. I know soon enough you will be grown and have a family of your own. I can't wait for the day when you get to hold your own child in your arms, but for now I'm going to cherish every smile, coo, poo, and scream you deem fit to throw my way. I'm going to love hug, dread every tantrum, and be grateful to have you in my life. We're going to fight, and I'm going to say and do things that you won't agree with. You're going to push all of my buttons and make me worry every time you leave my sight. Still, I'm going to love every minute of it all because you are mine. I love you, Aidan.

Love, Mama"

Skipper

Dear Aidan,

You've got Uncle Skipper's eyes. The color, the twinkle, it's all Skipper. And when you scrunch up your face in a grin for photos, well, that's Skipper too. I never got to meet Skipper. He died when he was just a kid. He drowned while on vacation with his parents and siblings. He was Papi's older brother. Raymond Dean, born on the 4th of July. When you're older, you'll have to ask Papi to tell you stories about him. Skipper was a cool little kid: kind, funny, loved carrots (according to what my great grandmother told me when I was little).

I can't imagine how much pain your great grandma went through when her oldest son died. I don't know how any parent is able to deal with something like that. It occurred to me many years later that that must have been why Grandma taught your Auntie Kim and I how to swim. It's also why your Papi won't let people go rafting or canoeing on the river without a life jacket. It's why I don't like for you to be anywhere near water without Daddy or me there to keep an eye on you.

I don't want you to be afraid of the water, but I do want you to be aware that bad things can and do happen. I want you to learn to swim and to be able to go in the deep end without holding my hand. I want you to be able to jump off the high dive and go in the ocean without fear. I love you.

Big Boy

Dear Aidan,

Happy belated second birthday! A year ago I started writing you these letters never realizing just how much I'd grow to enjoy putting down these words for you. Daddy and I have been so incredibly blessed to have you (and your sister) in our lives.

What I want to remember most about your second year is your never ending supply of energy. I know that most kids your age are filled with energy, but you seem to have an insane amount trapped in that tiny little body of yours. I'm not sure where you hide it, but could I possibly borrow some? You won't miss it, I promise. You'll most likely want to remember that this is the second year in a row you've received a pet for your birthday (last year you got Zelda the dog; this year it was Fish the fish). I don't think Daddy is going to let you go for a Hat Trick by getting you another pet next year, but you never know...

Last night was your first night in your big boy bed. You were so excited when you first saw that you could climb in and out of your own bed now so I didn't think there would be any problems getting you to go to sleep. I was wrong...sort of. There were a few tears (and they weren't all yours) at first, but after I sat with you for a little while, you willingly laid down and went to sleep. You looked so grown up when Daddy and I checked on you before we went to bed.

Daddy and I love you so very much.

Haircut

Dear Aidan,

Last week, Mormor took you to get a haircut. It wasn't your first one or anything special like that, but I felt sad after she sent me a picture of you with your hair chopped off. It was the shortest it's ever been cut, and those cute little swoopy curls in the back were completely gone. I know that was the point of getting the hair cut, but I still missed how your hair fell into your eyes (I'm sure you don't miss that at all). As much as I'm not a fan of Justin Bieber, I can't help but love how your hair resembles his.

You'll be two in just a couple of weeks. We'll be having a Sesame Street party for you with all of your grandparents there to show you how much they love and adore you. We'll have hot dogs and cupcakes, two of your most favorite foods. We'll probably even put in a DVD of Elmo's World for background music since you love it so much. Daddy bought you a Mr. Potato Head doll and is hoping to buy your very own pet fish. You'll really like that since you seem to get a kick out of the fish at the zoo and dr's office.

Lately, you've been really naughty. Throwing tantrums, not doing what you're told, pitching fits when you don't get your way (and sometimes even when you do). I know it's a phase, and that in the grand scheme of things, this is such a short period of time. But goodness, the constant whining certainly does get awfully hard to listen to for more than a few seconds. I know I lose my temper with you and don't always handle your tantrums with much grace, but I do love you so very much. I'll try to remember the next time you're being especially bratty that you'll only be this little for a little while longer.

A Date with Aunt Kate

Dear Aidan,

Tonight, Daddy and I are going to the movies and leaving you with your Aunt Kate. She's the first aunt you actually attempted to say her name. You took a lot of coaxing and prompting and bribing (she was willing to do anything to hear you say her name) before you finally did. I don't think I've ever seen her so excited! Neither of us are quite sure why you called her Aunt Pillow that one time though. That was pretty funny!

Yo Ho! Let's Go!

Dear Aidan,

We've added some new shows to your repertoire to give Steve and Blue a much needed vacation. You've recently become friends with the "Bubble Guppies" as well as "Jake and the Neverland Pirates". I can't even begin to tell you how tickled I was when you turned around yesterday morning and said to me, "Ahoy, maties!" I nearly fell off the couch from laughing.

You continue to surprise me every day with the new things you learn, say, and do. You know your colors and your shapes. You know almost all of your body parts. You can follow simple commands (dance, tickle, kiss, don't bite). You parrot what Daddy and I say all the time which always makes for amusement. We love you so very much and can't wait to see what you'll say tomorrow.

Elmo Loves You

Dear Aidan,

Elmo loves you, and so do I! You've known for awhile that Cookie Monster says, "Yumyumyum!" But we've been trying to teach you that not all of your friends from Sesame Street say that (although, I'm sure when they get to eat cookies they do in fact say the same thing as your hairy, blue friend). You've finally learned that Elmo actually says, "Elmo loves you!", but now it's thrown you some confusion because you seem to think that all of your muppet pals say the same thing as Elmo. No doubt, Oscar and Grover do in fact love you as do Big Bird and Bert and Ernie, but since none of them really have a catch phrase, it's just easier to have them all tell you they love you. It's definitely a step up from thinking all animals say, "Moo".

Auntie Kim Part II

Dear Aidan,

I love the way you say Auntie Kim. You absolutely refuse to say the auntie part, and for whatever reason, your mouth just won't let you say the "k" even though you have no problems saying "Aunt Kate" to your auntie Kaitlyn. Instead, anytime you talk about Auntie Kim, you call her, "Him". It's equal parts precious and hilarious, and I'm dreading the day that you start pronouncing her name correctly.

Last night you and Auntie Kim colored in your coloring books. You were even so chivalrous as to pull your riding car over for her to sit on since she's too tall for your picnic table. It was wonderful to watch you share and laugh with your auntie, especially since she goes back to Egypt tomorrow. I know you're going to miss her, but she'll be home this summer, and maybe you can talk her into taking you swimming.

Manners

Dear Aidan,

I so very proud of you today. Not only have you learned that "gross" is not the proper response to someone who has just sneezed, but you also learned "I'm sorry". I know that you were just parroting me since I had apologized to you only a few moments before for accidentally scratching your leg while changing your diaper. Still, it's a step in the right direction towards raising you to have good manners.

Tomorrow is Christmas. Hopefully by next year, we'll have you saying thanks and thank you without being reminded. But for now, I'll settle for you agreeing to give hugs after you finish opening your gifts. We'll keep working on the manners in the meantime.

Hugging You

Dear Aidan,

Last Friday, twenty little boys and girls were killed by a bad man with a gun. No one knows the full story yet on why he did what he did, only that he must have been very sick to have done something so awful. You're still too little to even be aware of what is going on around you, and you definitely didn't understand why Mommy cried when she held you Friday after work. You fell asleep in my arms yesterday afternoon, and it was so hard to put you down even though your sister needed me.

Daddy and I can't imagine the pain those other mommies and daddies are feeling right now without their babies to hug. We do know that we won't always be able to protect you. We can raise you to know how to protect yourself and to help others when they are in need and hope that that will be enough.

I love you and your sister so very much, and I will always try my hardest to keep you safe.

Little Sister

Dear Aidan,

The last month has been a whirl wind in our house. Your baby sister joined our family on 22 October at 12:33 P.M. You have been the most amazing big brother, and Daddy and I are so very proud of you.

We got to spend a full four weeks together at home. In those four weeks, we didn't do much more than play at the park and go to the mall to play at the inside park when it was too cold outside. You learned how to share Daddy and me as well as your toys. You also learned what it means to be gentle and nice. I especially loved every time that you came to check on your sleeping sister, patted her head, and then said, "Nice".

I don't know what else to say except thank you for taking all of this in stride and being such a good boy for us. I love you just as much today as I did the day you were born.

Only Child

Dear Aidan,

Today was your last day as an only child. Tomorrow, Daddy and I will go to the hospital and give birth to your baby sister. We'll bring her home a few days later and start life as a foursome. It will probably be confusing for you. "Who is this baby?" "Why is she staying here?" "Why is my daddy holding and loving on her instead of me?" I promise that just because we love you new baby sister doesn't mean we love you any less. In fact, love can never be divided. It can only be multiplied! There is so much room in daddy and my hearts that we couldn't possibly love you less. In fact, every day we love you more than we did the day before.

There are going to be times when you feel like you're always in trouble or being scolded for doing something wrong. We're not trying to be mean. We're still learning how to be good parents for you and Alice. We'll make mistakes, but please know that we still love you more than life itself. Nothing will ever change that.

Please don't feel like Alice is here to replace you either. You will always be our little boy and first baby. Daddy and I will do everything we can to make you feel included in all the new, exciting, and sometimes scary changes that bringing home a new baby can bring. In time, you won't even remember what it was like to not be a big brother. She's going to adore and love you just as much as Daddy and I do. You'll be her whole world, the one she looks up to and learns from (please try to not teach her how to hurt her head though).

I can't wait to bring Alice home so you can start to love her too.

Love,
Mama

Jet Plane

Dear Aidan,

Last weekend we took you on your first airplane ride. Daddy and I were beyond worried about how you'd do. Would taking off and landing scare you? Would the pressure from being up so high make your ears hurt? Would you be angry because you couldn't get down and play like you do at home? And do you know what? You were fine. You slept through almost every part of every flight and didn't throw any fits. Even with all of the issues we had getting to San Diego, you were a trooper. We were so proud of you!

You got to meet your Nana and Papa for the first time too. They love you so much and were so happy to finally get to hug and kiss you. You even ran right to Papa at one point for him to pick you up. You met all of my aunts and uncles as well as most of my cousins. They couldn't believe how much cuter in person you are. You also got you your first kiss from a girl (we'll count it since even though she's family, it's through marriage). Daddy and I were again impressed with how well you did with so many new people all over you.

You went on your first trolley ride but missed your first trip to the beach. That trolley just lulled you right to sleep, and none of us had the heart to wake you. You got your first bit of sunburn, but it wasn't bad and may have actually alone been redness from all of the hot weather.

We're hoping that the next time we go out there to see family, we'll get to take you to Disneyland for the first time and maybe Sea World and the San Diego Zoo too. We'll also make sure you're awake and happy so you can finally play at the beach.

Love,
Mama

Boo Boos

Dear Aidan,

Yesterday you fell off the couch at the babysitter's and cut your head open on the coffee table. Not cool, buddy. You were screaming and bleeding, and poor Anna and I had no idea how bad your injury was. I wet ahead and took you to the emergency room which may sound like a little bit of an over reaction, but I was scared. Really scared. Mama doesn't do blood very well, and she definitely does not like to see you in so much pain. You ended up getting four staples in your little head. I thought needles and stitches were bad, but the staples were definitely worse. The nurse and I had to hold you tiny body down while the doctor closed you up. You did get a pretty cool teddy bear out of the deal and your very own slushy that you didn't have to share with me or Daddy (although, I did steal a sip when you weren't looking; sorry about that).

Can we make an agreement though? I know you're going to get hurt again. I fully expect it and will try to lessen the pain and keep you from getting seriously injured when it's within my ability to do so. But next time, let's try to not need a visit to the ER until after you turn five. Or at least do that kind of stuff in front of Daddy instead. He might not handle the situation any better, but at least I won't have to be the one holding you down.

Love,
Mama

Auntie Kim

Dear Aidan,

Tomorrow your Auntie Kim is coming home! I know you don't remember her since it's been almost a year since the last time you saw her, but let me assure you, you love her! She gives you chocolate and tickles your belly. She'll probably even let you ride on her back while she crawls around on the floor (you were too little for that last time, but not this year, baby!). She'll cuddle you and hug you and make you smile and laugh until you pee your pants. Then she'll promptly hand you back to Daddy or me so you can be changed and start all over again.

If you're really lucky, she might even let you kiss her (just try not to drool when you do). You don't know what fun you're in for when your auntie gets home, but I promise you're going to love her just as much now as you did last summer. Only one more sleep to go, big boy!

Mama

Daddy's Boy

Dear Aidan,

The past couple of months have been a little difficult for me. Between the morning sickness and your complete and utter shunning of me, I feel like chopped liver. I know that you still love me and it's not anything personal. Sometimes it's just hard to take when you only want Daddy, and nothing I can do for you seems to be what you need or want. Eventually you'll come back to me, and I'll be begging for a spare minute to myself again. For now, I'll just enjoy the sweet smiles you give across the room and the kisses you willingly give at bedtime.

Love,
Mommy

Big Brother

Dear Aidan,

We found out a few days ago that you're going to be a big brother. Daddy and I were so stunned when we found out, but we are so very happy to be giving you a baby brother or sister. I want you to grow up being the best big brother you can be. You're going to get into fights and think that your sibling is the most annoying person in the world, but at the end of the day, you're going to love each other and do anything keep each other happy. I want you to set an example. Pick on your sibling, protect your sibling when others pick on him or her, help your sibling steal cookies from the cookie jar, show your baby brother or sister that it's ok to laugh hysterically at fart jokes but also to cry when your dog dies. I want you to build forts together, blow bubbles and try to catch them with the wand, giggle together in the dark until you fall asleep, race your bikes up and down the sidewalk (unless there's someone walking on it, then you move out of the way), catch fireflies, sing songs. But mostly, I want you to love and protect each other. Daddy and I will always love you no matter how many more siblings we give you. We'll never love you any less than we do today, and we'll never play favorites (except for when one of you is throwing a temper tantrum, then we might play favorites).

Love,
Mommy

Happy Birthday!

Dear Aidan,

"Today you are you. That is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you." Dr. Seuss Happy Birthday to You

When Daddy and I found out we were pregnant with you, we were so thrilled and excited. We wondered if you were going to be a boy or a girl. We wondered what your favorite colors would be. We wondered what kind of music you'd like to listen to. We wondered if there was ever going to come a day that we'd love you more than we already did. Every day we love you even more than the day before.

We eagerly anticipated each milestone: your first smile, your first roll over, sitting up, crawling, walking, talking. Now we're at your first birthday, and we couldn't be more proud, happy, and a little sad. One day very soon, you'll be going to your first day of school. Then you'll be learning how to drive, graduating high school, maybe college or the Armed Forces, getting married, and possibly having babies of your own.

As you grow and learn and become the man you're destined to be, I want you to always keep the words of Dr. Seuss close to your heart. You are the only you that is ever going to exist in this world, and Daddy and I are so much richer for having you as our son.

Love,
Mommy
